Big Tex: Behind the Scenes

How one of the largest state fairs receives annual wide media recognition

According to the PRSA, public relations is “A strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.” One of my favorite organizations that I believe exemplifies the best positive strategic public relations practices is the State Fair of Texas. Through its welcoming and inviting messaging, it comes as no surprise the Texas State Fair has established itself a beautiful reputation through its relationships with media outlets and the general public every year.

Media Relations

To receive regular media coverage, the organization features all of its upcoming newsworthy events, lineups, and initiatives in its newsroom. Their news releases build excitement for upcoming fresh new seasonal events and represent how the State Fair succeeds in attracting annual media coverage, piquing the public's interest. Their news releases feature what park guests have most to look forward to in the 2022 State Fair season: More Fair Food Announced for the 2022 State Fair of Texas, all-new concessionaires, attractions, and a grand reveal of a new wardrobe for Big Tex.

Social Media

To create public engagement, the State Fair stays connected with its audiences through its Instagram and Twitter. Here, they provide an outlet where audiences can ask questions and receive the latest updates on the schedule of events, contest announcements, park-saving discounts, and ticket price deals. The fair also excels at reaching younger audiences by creating content on TikTok that reflects current trends.

Community Outreach Programs

The State Fair is grateful for the community support that allows such a large event to be possible. In 2021, the fair strived to give back to the community through partnerships with 47 other local South Dallas area nonprofit organizations with a total contribution of $324,000. Furthermore, the fair also focuses on providing support for economic and educational development with 400-600 scholarship recipients pursuing education at any time. The fair's philanthropic efforts allow them to build a bigger overall brand and story, potentially leading to more publication opportunities than the organization could have found on its own.


In conclusion, through the organization's strategic communication strategies: proactive relations with media reporters and editors, public engagement and philanthropic efforts, the State Fair of Texas is an impressive organization that will only continue to build mutually beneficial relationships between other nonprofit organizations and the general public.
